EAST HAVEN – Raymond. J. Burgh, husband of Natalie Rueb Burgh (deceased) for 66 years, passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Yale New Haven Hospital/St. Raphael campus, with his devoted daughter and caretaker, Betsy Burgh, by his side. Ray is also survived by daughter Patricia House (Steven) of North Carolina; sister-in law Josephine Burgh, and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by parents Frederick and Delia Burgh, and all his siblings: brothers John Burgh, Joseph Burgh, James Burgh, Donald Burgh; and sisters Edna Kovalski, Margurite Bellmore, Betty Patton, Jean Lawler.
Born August 12, 1929 in Hamden, Ray served in the U.S. Army and was a Korean War veteran. He became a Yale University campus policeman and then joined the New Haven Police Department, was promoted to detective and served the force with dedication until his retirement in 1988. Ray and Nat moved to Venice, Florida for 30 years before returning to East Haven. They took vacations throughout New England and Ray especially enjoyed two Ireland visits, including a 50th wedding anniversary family trip. He was known for his quick wit and many practical jokes. Ray was a skilled golfer (three holes in one), learned to ski in retirement and was always on patrol; even in his last days in assisted living he was keeping track. His daughters will never eat a Hummel hotdog or watch the UConn women’s basketball team without smiling about dad.
Ray always enjoyed and was grateful for the visits and calls from family members, and the friendships he made over the years. The family wishes to thank the Hearth at Gardenside and Home Care Plus for their care and concern for Ray. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Thursday morning at St. Pio of Pietrelcina Parish in St. Vincent de Paul Church at 11:00 am. Burial will be at a later date in CT. Veteran's Cemetery, Middletown. Please omit flowers. MARESCA & SONS FUNERAL HOME 592 CHAPEL ST. NEW HAVEN in charge of arrangements.offer condolences @ marescafuneralhome.com.
