Obituary

Lyman E. Smith, 95, of Northford, Connecticut passed away peacefully in his home of 60 years on January 15 2022. Lyman was the beloved husband of Vesta Harrington Smith who predeceased him in 2020. He was born in Newport, New Hampshire on September 16, 1926, to the late Esther and Burt Smith. He was raised on a dairy farm in Windsor, Vermont.
The devastating attack on Pearl Harbor influenced Lyman to enlist at the age of 17 in the Navy. After basic training Lyman shipped out of San Diego to the Pacific Theatre and was assigned to the USS Sperry.  The aircraft carrier which transported him to his ship in the South Pacific went through the historic Typhoon Cobra. He didn’t talk much about the war however he did talk about surviving the typhoon and losing many sailors and aircrafts off the flight deck. Lyman was a part of “America’s Greatest Generation”.
After the war Lyman returned home to Windsor, Vermont and worked for the family business Smith Electric. He married Vesta in 1950 and they celebrated their 70th anniversary together in 2020. They relocated to Connecticut in 1958 where he worked at the former Pond Lily Co. He started as an electrician and became plant engineer, working there for over 25 years until the company closed. Then he went to work at Gateway Terminal in New Haven, CT for 25 years until he retired.
All his life Lyman loved the outdoors. Golf, boating, salt water fishing, and skiing were particular passions. After his retirement he and Vesta spent many winters in Jupiter, Florida allowing him to enjoy his love of golf. Known for his thoughtful, attentive ear and a great mentor for many. He enjoyed sharing a good laugh. Lyman had a good heart and will be profoundly missed by his family. He is survived by his four children, Lawrence Smith (Veronica), Richard Smith (Lisa), Patricia Bureau (Donald), and Pamela Smith. His six grandchildren, Daniel Smith, Victoria Smith, Christina Smith, Scott Bureau, Garrett Bureau, and Valerie LeMay. He was predeceased by his brother Howard Smith and his two sisters Gertrude McGuire and Velma Knox.
